Description

In 1963 Niko Tinbergen gave ethology its four questions: what causes a behavior, how it develops, what it is for, and how it evolved. Every one of them takes a behavior as its object. None of them asks about the animal.

Configuration puts the question that does: what is the current configuration of this individual’s five behavioral components? Body, personality, beliefs, emotions, and instincts — not a history, but a present state. The fifth question does not replace the other four. It runs underneath them, because the state of the machinery is what determines which option an animal selects, and two animals in different configurations meet the same situation differently.

The question has practical teeth. Of the handler’s five major influences, four work before the behavior happens; only boundary setting works through consequences, the half that training already has tools for. The book also takes the familiar able-and-willing matrix and shows where it runs out: put the same symptom through the five components and a crude binary resolves into five distinct findings, each with its own cause.

The field cases come from free-flight training and parrot reintroduction: why a fledgling needs a flock to join at all, how a small, deliberately built “kernel flock” of adult birds can be that flock, and how a predator response is built on false alarms first and near misses second.

Who this book is for

  • Animal trainers who want to work on the causes of behavior, not only its results
  • Parrot keepers and free-flight trainers
  • Conservation practitioners planning releases of social species
  • Ethologists and students interested in where the discipline goes after Tinbergen
